RPGs continue to dominate sales in 2025, as The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered sales saw it become the third-best-selling game of the year in just over a week in the US.
It only lags behind Assassin’s Creed Shadows and the top dog, Monster Hunter Wilds. It caps an impressive opening as Bethesda declared over four million people had played the remaster of the 2006 RPG in its first week, and on Steam, it beat Skyrim’s concurrent player record with a high of 170,000 players.
The figures come from Circana, which tracks the retail data for games in the US, for both physical and digital sales.
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered Bosses the Competiton
The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered is co-developed by Virtuous, the developer currently working on the Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater remake. Oblivion Remastered brings improved visuals, mechanics, and more to the beloved classic, and after years of reheated Skyrim, Elder Scrolls fans have clearly eaten up this new serving of Oblivion.
The long-rumored remaster finally saw daylight on April 22, 2025, just two days before the critically acclaimed new RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Despite the unexpected competition, Clair Obscur developer Sandfall Interactive found its own success, with over a million units shipped in just two days. It’s just been announced the game has passed the 2 million copies sold milestone.
It’s nice to see there was room for two RPG juggernauts simultaneously, but it certainly didn’t help another critically acclaimed game. The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy was released in the same week, and with its developer struggling financially, it’s terrible fortune that it was overshadowed by the other two RPGs out that week.
