2025 has already provided us with a wide variety of great games, and the same holds true in the RPG space. So, making a list of the Best RPGs of 2025 halfway through the year doesn’t seem like that much of a stretch!
Of course, this is only a list of the best RPGs of 2025 so far. There will undoubtedly be more great RPGs in 2025 (I’m sure the release dates for a few might even be confirmed soon). Naturally, that means what makes the grade now might not be in here come December if the competition heats up.
So, for now, here are the best RPGs of 2025 for you to nod in agreement with, roll your eyes at, and generally dispute because that’s the true meaning of lists, right? There’s no set order just yet; we’ll address that by the end of the year.
The Best RPGs of 2025 (So Far)
Avowed
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
Released: February 13, 2025

Obsidian’s Fantasy RPG has been something of an acquired taste, and given the studio’s pedigree, it’s easy to understand. However, Avowed still has its fans, thanks to strong writing, world-building, and a refreshing approach to side quests. No, it’s not going to scratch the same itch as other Bethesda RPGs, but it could be argued it’s doing a lot more interesting things to earn a place as one of the best RPGs of 2025 to date.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Released: February 28, 2025

It’s no surprise that the latest Monster Hunter continues the series’ longstanding success. It is the biggest game yet, with a large, interconnected, open-world, and while that’s been a point of contention for some Monster Hunter purists, it’s gone down well enough with the audience at large.
Also, smashing big, weird beasties with oversized swords has never looked so good.
Look Outside
Developer: Francis Coulombe
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Released: March 21, 2025

A throwback RPG that pours buckets of grisly cosmic horror into its concrete shell. Look Outside sees you cooped up in an apartment building when a cataclysmic event occurs that transforms people into horrific, twisted monsters. Survival is the name of the game, but that means venturing outside the safety of your apartment and meeting neighbors who have and haven’t been turned.
Promise Mascot Agency
Developer: Kaizen Game Works
Publisher: Kaizen Game Works
Released: April 10, 2025

The creators of the funky detective RPG Paradise Killer return with a messed up management RPG that fuses Yakuza with Pokemon. As a disgraced Yakuza who lost a huge sum of money in a deal gone wrong, you are exiled to a cursed town full of ‘mascots’; humanoid creatures that each have a particular skill that might (or likely might not) be useful to promote businesses and earn money to pay back what you owe your boss.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector
Developer: Jump Over The Age
Publisher: Fellow Traveller
Released: January 31, 2025

Jump Over the Age created one of the breakout indie RPG hits of modern times with Citizen Sleeper. It is a deeply existential sci-fi despair vessel full of rich characters and panicked confusion. You’re put in the cybernetic skin of a robotic drone with the digital memories of a person long gone, and even those memories are hazy. Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector keeps the trend going with a new character, once again being pursued by nefarious forces.
As with its predecessor, Citizen Sleeper 2 features some of the strongest writing in video games, building a rich world with words more than imagery. It’s undoubtedly been overshadowed by higher-profile releases, but Citizen Sleeper 2 is definitely one of the best RPGs of 2025
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Developer: Sandfall Interactive
Publisher: Kepler Interactive
Released: April 24, 2025

The year’s greatest RPG surprise? Probably, and by the year’s end, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 could well be in the running for all the awards. But its refreshing mix of Eastern and Western RPG design, infused with Gallic flair, is likely to have its impact felt in the RPG space for years to come.
The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy
Developer: Too Kyo Games, Media Vision
Publisher: XSEED Games, Aniplex
Released: April 24, 2025

One hundred days of war between schoolkids and monsters in an otherworldy academy is a great plot pitch, and coming from the mind behind the Danganronpa series means the outcomes aren’t going to be pretty.
The timing of The Hundred Line’s release left it in an unfortunate position as others garnered all the mainstream hype and praise, but make no mistake; you’re missing out on one of the best RPGs of 2025 if you haven’t yet experienced the mad, sad world of The Hundred Line.
Kingdom Come Deliverance II
Developer: Warhorse Studios
Publisher: Deep Silver
Released: February 4, 2025

The first Kingdom Come: Deliverance was an ambitious attempt to create a new RPG giant, and it was successful enough to fund a sequel that expands on the core idea of a medieval RPG and further develops the original game’s concepts.
Continuing the story of 15th-century peasant Henry, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II offers him and the player a sprawling adventure full of humor, violence, and authentic regional accents.
Labyrinth of the Demon King
Developer: J. R. Hudepohl
Publisher: Top Hat Studios
Released: May 13, 2025

We’ve seen plenty of Dark Souls-inspired RPGs over the years, but far fewer games inspired by an earlier time in FromSoftware’s chronology. Labyrinth of the Demon King is an unapologetically old-school tribute to King’s Field, served with a healthy dollop of grim PS1 survival horror aesthetic. It’s brutal, unnerving, and refreshingly simple in its goals.
It’s one of the best RPGs of 2025 so far because of how honestly it approaches being a ‘retro’ RPG.
