Gaping Jaw, also known as Adel Baron of Night, is the second Nightlord that you’ll come across in Elden Ring Nightreign, right after defeating Tricephalos. This is a very aggressive boss, and deals a lot of damage, where it can pretty much one-shot you with a single attack.
However, it’s also pretty easy to take down the boss with proper preparation in the first two days. If you’re looking to fight this boss, here’s a guide that will cover all the necessary details, including movelist, weaknesses, and recommended characters.
Gaping Jaw Movelist In Elden Ring Nightreign

Here’s a list of all the moves that you should be aware of when fighting Gaping Jaw in the game:
Moves | Description | How To Counter |
---|---|---|
Rush Down | The boss will run towards the player and deal damage in its path | You can simply run away from its path and you’ll be safe. |
Bite | Gaping Jaw will grab the player with its mouth and bite them, while also dealing Blood Loss | Roll backwards when the boss is about to bite you, since it has a really big hitbox, and side or front rolls will catch you. |
Slam | The boss uses its face to slam the ground in front, which deals high damage in a small area. | The slam comes out very fast, so its difficult to judge. If you can time your dodge its fine, but the best option is to maintain your distance. |
Pounce | Gaping Jaw will jump in the air and pounce at the player, dealing fatal damage. | Simply run away when you see the boss jumping in the air, and it’ll often miss the slam. |
Lightning Discharge | Once the boss is at 50% health, it will release a powerful lightning burst that can one-shot you. | The charge time takes a while, so you can easily run away from the boss the moment you see the attack brewing. |
Lightning Slam | Gaping Jaw will slam its face on the ground, but this time leave Lightning trails in triangular cross-sections. | Stay away from the cross-sections, and you will not take any damage. |
How To Defeat Gaping Jaw In Elden Ring Nightreign

The easiest way to defeat Gaping Jaw in Elden Ring Nightreign is to bring along weapons that can deal poison damage.
The boss is weak to poison, and all of its aggression is shut down the moment you start hitting it with this particular element. A few hits are enough to poison the boss, and once that happens, not only will it momentarily stun the Gaping Jaw, but also chip down its health very quickly.
Make sure you bring as many healing flasks as possible, and pick up all health and stamina boosts along the way. This is because the bite attack of the boss is deadly, and if your health is too low, you’ll die in one hit, no matter what you do.
Additionally, Scarlet Rot also works very well against this boss, so if you don’t find Poison, but instead find the earlier, you’ll shut down Adel in no time. However, Bleed doesn’t work very well as it’s resistant to Hemorrhage, so it will be difficult to proc the status effect on the boss.
Lightning also doesn’t work at all, so if you bring that particular element, the boss will run over you very easily.
Finally, make sure you learn its attack patterns as they are extremely telegraphed, and you should be quite comfortable within one or two tries.
Recommended Characters For Gaping Jaw In Elden Ring Nightreign

Here’s what our team ran when fighting Gaping Jaw in Elden Ring Nightreign:
- Ironeye
- Executor
- Recluse
Here, I was playing Ironeye, and my task was to plant the weakness on the boss and keep dealing poison damage to it using my bow. This helped stun the boss and create openings for the rest of my team.
The Executor was also running a poison Katana, which was incredibly helpful against the boss. As for the Recluse, their main job was to deal standard magic damage while using their Ultimate to mark the boss.
We also cleared the Shifting Earth, Crater event, which allowed us to upgrade our weapons to Legendary status, which was a massive damage boost. The Executor was the frontline for the team as with their Ultimate ability, especially, they managed to keep the boss’s gaze.
When the Executor felt overwhelmed, the Ironeye switched the gaze since it’s easy to avoid the boss’s attacks with the skill ability. The Recluse mostly stayed in the backline due to their lack of mobility.
Recommended Build
Here’s a rundown of the build I ran and what you should be focusing on when fighting Gaping Jaw:
Build Specifications | My Build | Recommended For You |
---|---|---|
Character Level | 13 | Ideally above 11 |
Weapon | Serpent Bow (Upgraded to Legendary) | Any weapon that can deal poison damage |
Relics and Talisman | HP Boost, Stamina Boost, Buff Poison damage, Resistances | Same as previous column |
Level is very important against this boss, as the HP boost you get from it can be the difference between surviving or dying from the boss’s bite attack. Poison weapon is mandatory against the boss, so that you stop it from running around and killing your teammates.
Stamina boost is also vital since it helps you dodge more and also attack for longer intervals.
