The Makers Of Returnal Announce A New Game, Saros At State Of Play

HouseMarque released a trailer for its new IP Saros at PS State Of Play last night. The game is expected to come out next year for PS5 and PS5 Pro, however the devs have promised gameplay reveals and other deepdives on Saros this year.

The game is set in ‘a lost, off-world colony’ of Carcosa, which looks to be permanently under the shadow of an eclipse. The protagonist here will be Arjun Devraj (who has been performed by Rahul Kohli – who was seen in successful and popular TV series like The Fall of the House of Usher & Midnight Mass); determined to get to the root of the mystery. In the trailer, he promises ‘Every time the sun dies, madness reigns. Then everything begins again. But after every death, I always come back stronger.’

So like Returnal, this one also promises to have the protagonist dying several times and beginning the loop. However, the one key difference over here, as indicated by the above dialog and also specified by the devs, this one looks to have some kind of a permanent progression and skill that you get every time you die and come back for one more run.

Housemarque, a Finland-based developer made their mark with Returnal – a fiendishly difficult roguelite, but also one of the games to best utilize the power of PS5 graphics and especially the dual-sense controller. The game had some brilliant and extremely responsive gunplay as well and sits at a score of 86 on Metacritic.

From the looks of it, the devs have addressed the one complaint that people had with Returnal, as while the game did have some parts that carry over into your next run, it was considered too less. The permanent skill and progression that carries over here in Saros, combined with all the other strengths that the developer has exhibited in Returnal, makes this game rank up high on my list of games to keep an eye out for this year and the next.
