Developer Frogwares has announced that The Sinking City Remastered is out right now for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC with a free upgrade for all existing owners of the original game on those platforms.

After a dour time for Frogwares, which not only had to contend with a war in its home country but also a dispute over ownership of The Sinking City IP, the developer is looking forward and sees this remaster as a positive new starting point.

“We plan to do big things with The Sinking City, starting with the sequel and then beyond,” Frogwares publishing director Sergiy Oganesyan said in a press release. “So, after our rather well-known struggles with the original, it feels amazing to have this positive moment be part of the game’s twisted history and for us to be the ones to fully decide it. Making it free to all our existing fans is our way of giving back to them for having supported us all this time through thick and thin.”

The Sinking City was first released in June of 2019, and saw long-time Sherlock Holmes developer Frogwares dip its toes into Lovecraftian waters. The new version upgrades the engine from Unreal Engine 4 to 5, and features some quality-of-life additions that fans have long been requesting. You can get an overview of what’s new below.

    The Sinking City Remastered Details

    • Game fully relit in Unreal Engine 5.
    • Enhanced locations with additional levels of detail and objects.
    • 4K textures and improved reflections.
    • Addition of a Photo Mode.
    • Support for DLSS, FSR, and TSR upscaling.

The Sinking City Remastered sees you in the gumshoes of Charles Reed, a war veteran turned private eye whose sanity is slipping due to some unknown cause. To find a cure, he heads to the city of Oakmont, which supposedly holds the key to his ailment, but also has some rather sinister secrets.

It’s another welcome slab of cosmic horror RPG goodness after we got some newer ones this year in the form of Look Outside and The Horror at Highrook.
