If you’ve managed to progress through Palworld and are ready to start taking on some of the later game fights, the next step is learning how to start a raid boss fight. Unlike Alpha Pals or tower bosses, raid bosses are not found waiting in a fixed location on the map. They must be summoned manually using a Summoning Altar and the correct boss item.
Raid bosses are designed to be major challenges. They have large health pools, powerful attacks, and can cause serious damage if you summon them in the wrong place. Before starting one, it is worth understanding the full process, from unlocking the altar to choosing where the fight should take place.
What You Need to Start a Raid Boss Fight
To start a raid boss fight in Palworld, you need three main things:
- A Summoning Altar
- The correct Slab or summoning item
- A suitable place to fight
The Summoning Altar is the structure used to begin raid encounters. Once it’s been built, you can offer the required Slab or item to summon the chosen boss.
Each raid boss has its own required item. For example, standard Palworld raid bosses use boss-specific Slabs, while the Terraria crossover boss Moon Lord uses a Celestial Sigil instead.
How to Unlock the Summoning Altar
The Summoning Altar is unlocked through the Ancient Technology section of the Technology menu.

You will need Ancient Technology Points to unlock it. These are usually earned by defeating major bosses for the first time, such as Alpha Pals, tower bosses, or other special encounters. If you have not unlocked enough Ancient Technology items yet, you may need to progress further before raid bosses become available.
Once unlocked, the Summoning Altar can be built using basic materials, including Stone and Paldium Fragments.
How to Build a Summoning Altar
After unlocking the recipe, open the build menu and place the Summoning Altar inside one of your bases.
This is important because the altar must be placed within a base area. You can’t simply place it anywhere in the open world and summon a raid boss wherever you like. But, at the same time, you really don’t want a massive raid boss ripping into your base.
So, before building it, think carefully about the location. Raid bosses can deal heavy damage, and using your main base as a battlefield can be risky. If you summon a boss into a working base filled with production lines, storage, beds, and decorative structures, there is a good chance the fight will cause problems.
For that reason, many players use a separate raid base or the dedicated Raid Area option when available. Of course, if you want to put some of your strongest Pals in that base, it might increase your odds a little.
How to Get Slabs for Raid Bosses
Most Palworld raid bosses require a Slab before they can be summoned. Slabs are usually made from Slab Fragments. These fragments are commonly found through higher-level activities such as dungeon chests, special areas, and other areas of late-game content.
The key detail is that fragments must match the boss you want to summon. You can’t use random fragments together to create any raid item. If you want to fight a specific boss, you need the correct Slab or summoning item for that encounter.
Palworld Raid Boss FAQs
Should You Fight a Raid Boss at Your Base?
The Raid Area is usually the safer choice, especially for your first raid boss fight.
You can fight at your base if you have built a dedicated arena, but raid bosses can damage structures and incapacitate Pals. If you do not want to risk your main base, use the Raid Area instead.
Can raid bosses be caught in Palworld?
No, raid bosses cannot be caught like regular Pals.
They are special combat encounters built around rewards, not direct capture. However, defeating a raid boss may reward an egg or other valuable items, depending on the boss.
How Should You Prepare Before Starting a Raid Boss Fight?
Bring strong combat Pals, suitable armour, reliable weapons, enough ammunition, food, and healing items.
It is also worth clearing the battlefield and checking the boss type before starting. Elemental counters can make a big difference in harder raids.
What Happens if You Lose a Raid Boss Fight?
If you lose, the Slab or summoning item is usually gone.
You may also damage your base if you choose to fight there, which is another reason to use the Raid Area or a dedicated raid base.
