Gothic Remake Development Information

The idea of the Gothic Remake began in early 2019, when a small team of developers started building an internal prototype for THQ Nordic. This early work eventually became the Gothic Playable Teaser, which was released on Steam in December 2019.
The teaser wasn’t intended to be a final representation of the remake. Instead, it was designed to measure player interest and gather feedback from the community. It hit a solid steam peak of nearly 4,000 players, with many more downloads recorded, showing that a remake of the cult classic was warranted.
Following the interest of the playable teaser by the gaming community, THQ Nordic officially announced in February 2020 that a full remake was moving forward. However, due to the mixed reception of the direction of the playable teaser, THQ Nordic made it clear that they will be starting from scratch and will stay closer to the original.
THQ Nordic was so invested in making a worthy remake of Gothic that they established a brand-new studio in Barcelona in 2021, called Alkimia Interactive, who would lead the development of the game. In this case, Gothic Remake started its full development in 2021 and has been in the works for the past 5 years.
Throughout the development cycle of the remake, THQ Nordic and Alkimia Interactive has been adamant about keeping the charm of the original, while expanding on what matters. It promised to keep the faction system, make exploration more engaging, combat more modern, and overall, give the classic the remake it truly deserves.
