There are plenty of reasons to be excited for the Gothic Remake. Developer Alkimia Interactive have promised to improve upon the original in many ways, such as expanding exploration, having a deeper progression system, and of course, improving combat.
While I never got the chance to play the demo of the Gothic Remake or even had a chance to play the original in 2001, I am still most excited for the improved combat system. Many players have noted that the combat system was the weakest aspect of the game, so it’s nice to hear that the developers have taken steps to correct this.
A combat system can make or break an RPG, and Alkimia Interactive knows this firsthand. That’s why they have recently released a deep dive into the combat of the Gothic Remake, detailing everything there is to know about the revamped combat system. Let’s dive into those details here.
Responsiveness and Animations

Combat was often one of the most debated aspects of the original Gothic, as its deliberate animations and unique directional attacks created a steep learning curve. It had a great foundation for a combat system, but due to the technology at the time, it didn’t work very well and just resulted in a clunky experience. I know that clunkiness does not fly in today’s gaming world, so I’m pleased to see this being corrected.
Rather than replacing those mechanics with a generic action-RPG system that focuses simply on light and heavy attacks, developer Alkimia Interactive has focused on refining and expanding them for a modern audience. This includes faster responsiveness to directional inputs and more realistic animations, making the combat feel more grounded overall.
All Weapons Serve a Purpose

Unlike most RPGs, where players only choose a weapon based on their stats, the Gothic Remake makes each weapon type serve a real purpose. According to Alkimia Interactive in the gameplay deep dive video, this is done by making it so “certain weapon types are better against different enemies.” For example, one weapon type is better against Golems, while another weapon is better against humans. In other words, choosing your weapon is more than just looking at its stats or style.
I personally love this idea as it forces the player to hold on to weapons, rather than selling them, since you never know when it’ll come in handy. It forces you to look at the situation at hand, determine which weapon will be most effective in the current moment, and equip it so you go in fully prepared. My biggest complaint from weapons in other RPGs is that they don’t hold real value, but that’s not the case in Gothic Remake.
Practice Makes Perfect

Just like in the original game, combat effectiveness is closely tied to character progression. As players invest points into weapon skills and training, their character doesn’t simply deal more damage—their fighting style visibly improves. For example, if I spend time and spend points with the two-handed trainer in town, then my ability to swing two-handed weapons will improve, leading to faster animations and deadlier attacks.
Or, if you want to become a skilled archer, investing points here will allow you to shoot arrows faster and improve your overall aim. In other words, new attack animations, smoother weapon handling, and more efficient combat techniques become available as mastery increases. This unique progression system creates a strong sense of growth, as you will be constantly rewarded the more you play.
Defense Is Your Friend

Combat is not all about offense in Gothic Remake and defense actually plays a crucial role in your success. The enemies in the game are brutal, so mastering the dodge, parry, block, and movement is the only way you’ll come out alive. Perfectly timing a parry and using Gothic Remake’s newly added directional dodge system is at the forefront of the combat system.
This defensive approach to combat reduces the amount of spamming a player can do, making it feel more tactical overall. I’m most excited for the ability to parry here, as long as it’s done in a way that feels satisfying, such as an audio cue or vibration of the controller. We will have to wait for full release to find out if that’s the case.
Dynamic Enemy Encounters

One of my favorite aspects of the combat in Gothic Remake is that you never know what type of enemy you’ll be facing in your adventure. Each enemy has its own unique characteristics and behaviors, such as attack patterns and the way they interact with the player. For example, one enemy may be able to knock you on the ground due to sheer strength, while some may travel in a pack and surround you.
This alone will keep the game fresh, as you will constantly be learning how to approach each combat encounter. It also simply makes the world feel more alive which was one of the major issues with the original game.
Transform Into Various Creatures

If you were worried that Gothic Remake was going to remove the ability to transform into various monsters, you can rest assured that it’s still in the game. Throughout the game, you will find scrolls that allow you to transform, granting you the ability of that specific monster. For example, if you want to transform into a fire-breathing lizard and use fire as a way to deal damage, you can do that in Gothic Remake.
My favorite part of this feature is that you can turn into a beetle, which allows you to complete stealth sequences with ease, since you are so tiny and NPCs will have trouble spotting you. The good news is that this feature is completely optional and you don’t have to engage with it if you don’t want to. It’s just a great way to add player agency.
Schools of Magic

Now for the best part, and my personal way to approach RPGs, you can fully focus on magic if you’d like. There are many schools of magic to learn in Gothic Remake, and they can be acquired by finding Runes through exploration.
According to Alkimia Interactives’ gameplay deep dive, some Runes include “Ice and Necromancy spells”, where the former allows you to paralyze enemies and the latter allows you to summon monsters to help you fight enemies. As you progress further in the game, stronger Runes will become available, allowing the player to become a very powerful mage.
