Microsoft and Xbox stores have been known to make the occasional mistake and accidentally give a game away for free. It’s not all that uncommon. It happens, the devs, Microsoft/Xbox catch the issue, the game is removed from gamers’ accounts due to the error, and that’s the end of it. Or at least it usually is.
A couple of weeks ago, RPG developer legends inXile posted to X (formerly Twitter) letting players know that they had accidentally been giving Wasteland Remastered away for free. But, there’s a twist: unlike most developers, when they realize they’ve given their game away for free, inXile has offered up free copies of the iconic RPG to players instead of taking it away from them.
While the game isn’t currently playable for anyone who managed to snag a free copy, inXile has stated that players will “soon see the (non-working) game removed from your library, and you’ll have a new copy to claim waiting for you in your Offers & Credits.”
Because the game was made free due to a pricing error, anyone who grabbed a copy in time will find that it simply won’t work. The console won’t recognize the digital licence; it simply won’t launch. Therefore, if you’re one of those lucky people who picked up on the error, make sure to check in on your Offers & Credits, and you should be able to grab your free working copy from there soon.
What is Wasteland Remastered?
If you’re new to RPGs, or lucky enough to be too young to remember Wasteland, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Wasteland is a classic RPG that was originally released back in 1988. Much like the legendary RPG Fallout, it features a post-apocalyptic world set 100 years after a nuclear war devastates the planet.
Wasteland Remastered is the 2020 remaster of the classic RPG that went on to inspire some of the most popular post-apocalyptic RPGs ever made. If you weren’t lucky enough to grab a free copy during the recent pricing error, I highly recommend picking it up anyway; you won’t be disappointed.
